it would allow players to make better suggestions and if the server shuts down then someone else would be able to set up their own server.

^sounds pretty interesting, the first idea. More like a plugin list though, since I'm certain a lot of player's could come up with more realistic ideas and suggestions, since it's obvious that a lot of the plugins OG uses are quite common ones. Would open up for a new perspective on the player-> developer connection. Definitely not a must, but could be interesting to see in practice.

What I mean is just making the source code for the custom plugins and the custom source code for the website free for anyone to use and analyse (open-source). when I said that it would allow people to make better suggestions I mean that it would make suggestions from players better as they would know how the server works so they would be able to know whether their suggestion would work well for the server internally. For what I mean by people would be able to make their own server if and when this server shuts down I mean that people would be able to create a seperate server that uses lot's of the same source code as OG-SG the way LibreOffice was created as a fork of OpenOffice.org when developement of that project stopped.
TLDR: Make OG-SG the linux of SG servers.

I don't see the point in making it open source. People could make fake scam websites easier, people could make fake copies for bad intent, etc.

If the server would close down then there could be a reason to open source it.

Not only would it cause a bunch of players to create crappy rip offs, it would also be very easy for someone to dig through the source code and find an expoit and use it.

Open source is no doubt easier to find exploits with, but it is a double bladed sword since it also helps good people find and patch bugs on their own. This is always a hugely debated thing for Open Source vs. Proprietary and in all actuality, it balances itself out perfectly in the end or it removes exploits quicker than the malicious users can use it.

In general, I do think the server should stay proprietary in nature and not release their source code since this definitely would cause a lot of clones to pop up, and no doubt, many of them would be full of scams simply due to the nature of people.

You have a good point, but there is one major flaw in you argument, that being there haven't been very many cases of large hacking cases that take advantage of that (badly written but you get the point). Think, the Mars rover that nasa put on mars a few months back, runs a version of linux on its computers - if open source software makes it easy for people to find security flaws in software then why is it that an organisation ran by the USA government (ish) uses linux.

EDIT: I know I made it sound like it is impossible to hack open-source software. I'm just saying that it isn't actually as easy as you think it is.
